Calumet City is a Cook County city with a population of over 37,000 residents; however, the community experienced a population decline of over 5% from 2000 to 2010. Locals often call the community Cal City, and it was founded in 1892 as West Hammond. The name was officially changed in 1924. Visitors to Calumet City often notice the community’s pair of large water towers that have been painted with smiley faces, and these landmarks serve as a major point of pride among residents. There are several schools located here, but high school students attend one of two high schools depending on what side of Torrence Avenue that they live on: Thornwood High School and Thornton Fractional North High School.

There are several interesting things to see and do in Calumet City. Jump N’ Jam Playland is a popular destination for families with young children, while the River Oaks Golf Course is a hot spot for people who want to play a round of golf. The Green Lake Family Aquatic Center is a great place for residents to spend a hot summer day, and outdoor recreation can also be enjoyed at Finneran Park, the Sand Ridge Nature Preserve, and Calumet Park.

Since Calumet City is located so close to Chicago, residents often take advantage of the Metra in order to check out some of Chicago’s great festivals and events. During the summer, the Chicago Blues Festival and the Chicago Air and Water Show are great entertainment opportunities. Foodies also travel to Chicago to check out the Taste of Chicago food festival.

The weather in Calumet City changes quite dramatically from season to season. In the winter, residents will need to deal with frigid temperatures and frequent snowfall, but the summer months are hot and quite humid.
